Review: Drowning by Jassy de Jong

When I approach a novel promising a love story filled with steamy love scenes the last thing I expect to find is domestic violence. With that said, Jassy de Jong’s Drowning is a touching tale of a woman’s life—from a husband that is less than stellar to a near death experience that puts her in the care of a man who can provide her the world.

From the descriptive opening pages of Drowning I found myself immersed in the horrific experiences of Erin Mitchell. She isn't the strongest female character and for good reason. While she is hopeful in her marriage and a tad naïve at times, you can’t help but pray she finds the strength to overcome her husband’s insanity.

Her world is turned upside down when she meets the handsome Nicholas who makes a sexual offer that leaves her breathless. The chemistry between Erin and Nicholas pulls the story away from the heartbreaking marriage allowing Erin to see her life without rose colored glasses. The romance that blossoms between them warms the heart.

As for the chemistry between the Nicholas and Erin I can only say that it SPICY! The sex scenes are heated and very intense. Even though she technically is cheating on her horrendous excuse for a husband you really can't hate her for it. She battles with her choice and in the end sees the bigger picture.

Drowning has you holding your breathe at times waiting for the negativity her husband brings to the table to end. I know that many romance readers don't necessarily care for cheating in romance novels but this one breaks the mold giving a purely satisfying reason for the cheating. Grab a copy of this one ladies it's steamy and brilliantly written.

Synopsis (per Goodreads)

Sensuous but stifled New York City photographer Erin Mitchell thinks going to South Africa on assignment will be the perfect getaway.

But when a flash flood washes away Erin’s vehicle and she is stranded at a luxury safari lodge, Erin’s romantic working vacation takes an interesting turn. She awakens from her near-drowning and meets her rescuer, Nicholas―hot and brilliant, successful and caring―not at all like her abusive husband. At Leopard Rock in the steamy South African heat, Erin faces the toughest choices of her life.

Nicholas is ripped, he's smart and he's "no strings attached." To give in, or not to give in drowns Erin’s senses as she struggles with two impossible goals: ignore the exquisite physical charms of her host, and conceal every last detail whenever her controlling husband calls. On the other side, Nicholas faces impossible choices of his own, as the bon-vivant playboy may just possibly collide with feelings more powerful than lust.

Erotic. Exotic. Wild. Drowning sizzles in the African heat as one woman is stretched to the breaking point by the strength of her vows and the intensity of her seething primal desires.

De Jong’s ability to bring such a dark and horrendous topic front and center and balance it perfectly with a beautiful love story proves she is an author to watch. Drowning has much to offer readers of romance and erotica—its complex characters, touching scenes, and steamy lovemaking will keep you turning the pages well into the night.
